What are superfoods?

Superfoods are foods are mostly plant-based but also some fish and dairy that are thought to be more nutritious than other foods.

Theres no set criteria for determining what is and what is not a superfood. It probably originated as some marketing term to steer consumers to products labeled as such.

But, the current popular superfoods really are more nutritious.

Some of the nutrients that superfoods contain include

Antioxidants – Thought to ward off cancer
Healthy Fats – Thought to prevent heart disease
Fiber – Thought to prevent diabetes and digestive problems
or
Phytochemicals – Numerous health benefits

Some current popular superfoods include

Blueberries
Rich in vitamins, soluble fiber and phytochemicals

Kiwifruit
High in vitamin C and rich in antioxidants, also contains serotonin

Beans
Source of low-fat protein

Whole grains but not the instant kind.
Whole grains are not stripped of their nutrient-containing bran and germ during processing

Quinoa
Great source of protein, vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants

Nuts and Seeds – These have a lot of calories.
Contain high levels of minerals and healthy fats

Kale
Loaded with vitamins A, C, K, fiber, calcium and other minerals

Sweet potato
Excellent sources of fiber, vitamin A and more

Salmon, Sardines, Mackerel
Rich in omega-3 fatty acids

Acai berry
Rich in antioxidants

Noni Fruit
Rich in phytochemicals and potassium

Dragon Fruit
Rich in antioxidants, contain vitamin C, polyunsaturated (good) fatty acids, and several B vitamins, as well as carotene and protein

Pomegranate
Contains ellagitannins (ellagic acid), which have known anti-cancer properties

Theres probably a lot more but thats a good start and a pretty good variety of super healthy foods for you.

Theres also companies that are combining all kinds of superfoods and making some pretty cool and delicious snack like stuff out of them. Stuff I even like and I usually dont like a whole lot, especially healthy stuff.

If you include some superfoods in your diet or if you replace some or all of your snacks with some superfood snacks, its probably going to be MUCH healthier for you!

You can get superfoods online, health stores, and even supermarkets like Whole Foods.

But you gotta watch out for how theyre processed. There are some suppliers that use pesticides and/or processing methods that could be way less healthy.

Its best to look for all natural, organic and GMO on the label.
